Ulangan 11:16-17

Exhortation to Instruction and Obedience

11:16 Make sure you do not turn away to serve and worship other gods! ¹  11:17 Then the anger of the Lord will erupt ²  against you and he will close up the sky ³  so that it does not rain. The land will not yield its produce, and you will soon be removed ⁴  from the good land that the Lord ⁵  is about to give you.

Ulangan 28:38-40

The Curse of Reversed Status

28:38 “You will take much seed to the field but gather little harvest, because locusts will consume it. 28:39 You will plant vineyards and cultivate them, but you will not drink wine or gather in grapes, because worms will eat them. 28:40 You will have olive trees throughout your territory but you will not anoint yourself with olive oil, because the olives will drop off the trees while still unripe. ⁶

[11:17]  ² tn Heb “will become hot”; KJV, NASB, NRSV “will be kindled”; NAB “will flare up”; NIV, NLT “will burn.”

[11:17]  ³ tn Or “heavens.” The Hebrew term שָׁמַיִם (shamayim) may be translated “heaven(s)” or “sky” depending on the context.

[11:17]  ⁴ tn Or “be destroyed”; NAB, NIV “will soon perish.”

[11:17]  ⁵ tn Heb “the Lord.” See note on “he” in 11:4.

[28:40]  ⁶ tn Heb “your olives will drop off” (נָשַׁל, nashal), referring to the olives dropping off before they ripen.
